Job Description

This position functions in the surgical operating room collecting and interpreting a patient’s electroneurodiagnostic data during surgery. It provides the surgeon with information regarding the surgical procedure’s effect upon the patient’s central and peripheral nervous systems. The expected outcome of monitoring is to preserve or improve the patient’s peri-surgical neurological function.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides real time technological supervision, interpretation, and diagnostic/theraputic (interventional) suggestions or recommendations during intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring.
  • Performs or supervises varied and complex Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM) procedures including Somatosensory Evoked Potentials, Visual & Auditory Evoked Potentials, Facial nerve monitoring, Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electromyogram (EMG) and other related neurodiagnostic test.
  • Uses knowledge of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, and pre-operative status of the patient to interpret any changes in the monitoring data and communicates this quickly and correctly to the surgeon and the anesthesiologist
  • Possesses the skill of accurate and stable electrode placement for recording and stimulating.
  • Recognizes proficiently the recorded waveforms and variations from the patient’s baseline recording.
  • Carries out the intraoperative neurodiagnostic monitoring procedures performed and is aware of existing guidelines that apply.
  • Possesses knowledge of the general principles of modern anesthetic techniques, the effects of different anesthesia regimens on the waveforms being recorded, and the structures responsible for generating the effects.
  • Identifies technical and physiological problems during examination in complex environments such as intensive care units, bedside, emergency units and operating rooms.
  • Calibrates and operates the electroneurodiagnostic instrumentation used in the operating room.
  • Troubleshoots and corrects any recording instrument malfunction.
  • Possesses knowledge about electrical safety, situations that may increase the risk of injury to the patient, and the implications for all type of electrode applications.
  • Possesses knowledge about the use of collodion, acetone, or other biohazardous or flammable materials in the operating room environment.
  • Possesses knowledge about other instrumentation in the operating room, how this instrumentation affects the quality of the neurodiagnostic recording during surgery, and knows how other instruments affect the electrical safety of the patient.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in routine electroneurodiagnostic testing and
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience monitoring electroneurodiagnostics (END) procedures in the operating room under the supervision of a qualified physician/neurophysiologist
  • Advanced Academic (doctoral) Degree in relevant field such as Medical Doctor, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Chiropractic, Doctor of Audiology, etc.
  • Progressing toward Diplomate American Board of Neurophysiological Monitoring (DABNM) eligibility or equivalent
