Professor: Health and Social Care

To lead our continuing growth as a global research and education institution, we are committed to expanding our professoriate across areas of research strength. If you have the ability, confidence, and determination to drive groundbreaking research in your area, this is your chance to join us within the area of Health and Social Care, build a research portfolio that matches your vision, and to achieve real-world impact. We are ranked in the top twenty for the power of research in both Allied Health Professionals and Social Work and Social Policy (REF 2021).

About us

With over 4,000 staff members and around 40,000 students – including some 6,000 choosing to study for a postgraduate qualification – we are a big institution with even bigger ambitions. We are proud to be an integral part of the great city of Manchester, but our impact reaches around the globe. Currently, we offer more than 250 postgraduate taught programmes and have 14 centres of research expertise.

We are committed to providing excellent education to transform our students’ lives, and to delivering high quality research with powerful real-world impacts and benefits, as evidenced by our highly successful REF outcome: 30% of our research, across more than 740 academics, has been rated as world leading. And 91% of our research impact is world leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021).

Now, we are making a significant investment in realising our objectives to excel in education and to build on our research reputation. Alongside our £400m campus and University infrastructure upgrade, we are investing in people: making Manchester Metropolitan the logical next step for talented, ambitious senior research academics at their peak

About the opportunity

You will join an institution of innovation, excitement and growth where we explore creative and collaborative methods of engagement and research. You will play a lead role in the Centre for Health, Psychology and Communities, which has over 150 active researchers, making it one of the largest communities of health and social care research in the UK. Research strengths include learning disabilities and autism, mental health, communication disability, neuroscience of ageing, impaired mobility, domestic violence and abuse, and death and dying. In REF 2021, we ranked in the top twenty for the power of research in both Allied Health Professionals and Social Work and Social Policy. In Manchester, the devolution of health and social care budgets provides a unique opportunity for researchers to contribute to transformational change that impacts the lives of millions of people.

To address these issues, we partner with the NHS, local authorities, universities, regulators, think tanks, advocacy networks, professional bodies and, most importantly, local communities. We co-produce work that is often focused on themes of social justice, which drives us to do higher quality and more impactful research. We have strong international links, particularly in the Global South where our researchers work with the UN and other agencies in Africa and South Asia to enhance the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

You will have the freedom to tailor your development and build your academic reputation. Alongside expanding on your own vision and expertise, you will play a key role in mentoring others, promoting a cooperative, intellectually curious research culture and, as a member of the leadership community, supporting our long-term research strategy to enrich students’ lives while having a positive effect on our world. You can count on our full support; from the financial backing you need to the collegiate atmosphere and extraordinary quality of life that Manchester Metropolitan can offer.

About you

As an inspiring and driven researcher, you are full of ideas and excited about having the scope and support to build on them.
